TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) — The election is behind us, but the battle over abortion rights in Florida is far from over.
While a majority of Floridians voted to reverse the state’s six-week abortion ban, the ballot measure fell short of the 60 percent needed to pass.
People on both sides are preparing for the next round on this contentious issue with Democrats saying the republican party is not done restricting access, and Republicans saying this issue is not top of mind on their list of priorities.
Democrats on the house floor, like Minority Leader Fentrice Driskell, have shared that they plan to continue to revisit the debate on abortion rights.
“I am hopeful that we can revisit the restrictions currently placed on women and their ability to have agencies over their own bodies,” said Leader Driskell.
Echoing that message and warning Floridians, Representative Anna Eskaman, shared that if you think the republican party is done banning abortion access, think again.
“I’m committed to doing what I can to appeal the sick-week abortion ban, but I am actually more concerned by the efforts by the republican caucus to restrict access even further,” said Rep. Eskamani.
Representative Paula Stark shares that she was surprised Amendment 4 didn’t pass and hasn’t heard of the republican party restricting abortion rights further. Stark hopes that it doesn’t go any further and said she would not be voting for anything that adds any more restrictions.
