Mayor Gainey says homeless encampments Downtown are gone

Remember all those homeless encampment sites in Downtown Pittsburgh? According to Mayor Ed Gainey, they’re all gone.

Full conversation with Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey:

“We don’t have no more encampment sites Downtown,” Gainey told Larry Richert on The Big K Morning show. “We’re moving people into housing that’s respectable and dignified.”

But callers to the Marty Griffin Show, such as this Downtown merchant, disagreed.

“That isn’t true,” she said. “It’s ridiculous. I don’t know what he’s talking about, but they’re everywhere.”

She cited the trail along River Avenue underneath the 16th Street Bridge, Second Avenue by the jail, and Liberty Avenue as examples of places Downtown where homeless encampments still exist.
