MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The City of Memphis is taking a major step toward reducing violence by awarding nearly 40 community organizations grants in an effort to make its neighborhoods safer.
On Tuesday, the city unveiled recipients of its Safer Communities Grant .
Memphis Mayor Paul Young said he doesn’t recall donations being this large since he took office earlier this year.
“We are working on both ends of the public safety spectrum suppression side with law enforcement as well as prevention and intervention with non-profits,” Young said.

The Safer Communities Grant Program allocated $1 million to 39 community organizations, providing vital funding for violence reduction and community safety initiatives in various Memphis zip codes.
“There is one vision for this city to make it a safe and thriving city,” said Dr. Reginald S. Boyce, the Director of Community Affairs for the City of Memphis. “We want our kids to grow in safe environments. We want them to have all the tools that are necessary to thrive.”
