AROUND TOWN: When to Call for the Next SPLOST; Loudermilk on J6

When it comes to renewing the county government’s 1% sales tax as well as the Cobb School District’s, there aren’t that many options for when a referendum can be held.

Greg Teague, who chairs the Cobb Chamber of Commerce’s transportation committee, gave a reminder about this to the chamber’s governing board on Monday.

State law allows for SPLOST (special purpose local option sales tax) referendums to be held during county wide elections. In Cobb, that’s on even years, meaning the next two opportunities are in 2026, during the governor’s race, and 2028, during the next presidential race.

They can be held during the May primary or the November general election on those years.

“So that basically between now and the end of 2028 only gives us four opportunities to have any kind of a SPLOST question on the ballot,” Teague said.

In that four-year timeframe, the county government’s six-year SPLOST will sunset on Dec. 31, 2027.

“So it’s likely that the county commission will want to put that back on the ballot sometime between now and the end of 2027, since it’s going to be expiring. So really it’s most likely going to be on the ballot sometime in 2026 if they want to renew it,” he said.
