Madison Police Department combats hate crimes

MADISON, Wis. – There have been a recent string of hate incidents not only in Wisconsin, but across the country. In light of it all, the Madison Police Department is focusing on areas on where it feels it has advanced on the hate crimes issue.

Just this past weekend, there was a Neo-N azi march in Columbus, Ohio, and in just the last couple of weeks there were racist flyers spread around Fitchburg, and some students on UW-Madison’s campus received racist text messages from unknown numbers. At the start of 2024, the Madison Police Department started a hate crimes task force to try and better identify these incidents in Madison, and News 3 Now spoke with MPD about where it feels it has made progress in that area.

“Making sure that these cases are being reviewed at a command level with a bunch of different people kind of listening to the facts, making sure that we’re being consistent in what we’re assigning to detectives and also being consistent in what you know, the DA’s office will be able to charge quite frankly,” said Daniel Nale, captain with MPD.
