Democrat Takes Narrow Lead in California House Race

Additional Coverage:

In California’s 45th Congressional District, Democratic challenger Derek Tran has taken a narrow lead over Republican incumbent Michelle Steel. With 94% of votes counted, Tran leads by 102 votes.

The district includes parts of Los Angeles and Orange counties. A victory for Tran, the son of Vietnamese refugees, would bolster Democrats’ efforts to chip away at the Republican margin in the House.

Currently, the House stands at 218 Republicans to 212 Democrats, with five races still undecided. Democrats lead in two of those races, while Republicans lead in three.

The race between Steel and Tran was the most expensive House race in the country, with over $46 million spent.
