Tom’s of Maine Toothpaste Production Under Scrutiny

An FDA inspection uncovered serious issues at a Tom’s of Maine toothpaste factory. Water used in production contained Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacteria that can cause infections. Paracoccus yeei bacteria was also found in one toothpaste batch.

The FDA also discovered a “black mold-like substance” near production equipment, as well as powder residue near a toothpaste marketed for children. The agency criticized the facility’s cleanliness and maintenance, emphasizing the need for strict hygiene standards to prevent product contamination.

Colgate-Palmolive, Tom’s of Maine’s parent company, stated that they are working with the FDA to address the concerns. The company maintains that its products are safe and undergo thorough testing before distribution. They have implemented additional water safety measures and engaged experts to evaluate their systems.
