Deadly storm slams Pacific Northwest

Additional Coverage:

A powerful storm hit the Pacific Northwest and northern California on Tuesday, bringing heavy rains and strong winds.

As of early Wednesday, at least one person had died and hundreds of thousands were without power. The storm is expected to continue through Wednesday morning.

The National Weather Service warned of a “once-in-a-decade” bomb cyclone, with winds exceeding 60 mph causing power outages and downing trees.

In Snohomish County, Washington, a woman in her 50s was killed when a tree fell on a homeless encampment. In Maple Valley, two people were injured when a tree fell on their trailer.

The NWS urged people to stay safe by avoiding exterior rooms and windows, and to use caution when driving. They also recommended trimming loose branches and parking away from trees.

As of 1:20 a.m. PST, over 700,000 customers in Washington, 26,000 in California, and nearly 9,000 in Oregon were without power. The power outages forced the Eatonville School District in Washington to cancel classes on Wednesday.
