Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy Propose Federal Spending Cuts

Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy have unveiled plans for their “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE), which aims to slash $500 billion from federal spending.

Target Areas

DOGE will focus on cutting unauthorized spending and funds used in ways not intended by Congress. They have identified areas such as the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and international organizations as potential targets.

Federal Employee Reductions

DOGE also plans to reduce the number of federal employees. Musk and Ramaswamy believe the president has legal authority to implement “mass head-count reductions” and encourage voluntary terminations through incentives. They also support mandatory office attendance for five days a week.

Insufficient Authorization

The largest source of unauthorized spending is veterans’ health care. However, Musk and Ramaswamy have not specified if they will target this area. Other programs with expired authorizations include opioid treatment, the State Department, and NASA.

Implementation Challenges

DOGE’s plans face challenges. Most federal spending is mandatory, making it difficult to cut without Congressional approval. Additionally, federal employees have job protections, potentially limiting the number of layoffs.

Skepticism and History

Musk and Ramaswamy have expressed confidence in their ability to cut costs. However, past efforts to reduce federal spending have often had limited success.
