Tainted alcohol kills 4 tourists, including American

Additional Coverage:

A tragic incident in Laos has claimed the life of an American tourist. The death occurred in Vang Vieng, a popular destination for backpackers.

Australian authorities have confirmed the death of a 19-year-old woman who was evacuated from Vang Vieng for treatment. Her friend remains in critical condition. Thai officials have attributed the deaths to methanol poisoning.

Two Danish citizens have also died in Laos, but the cause of death is unclear. New Zealand is investigating a case of potential methanol poisoning in a citizen.

The British Foreign Office is providing assistance to its citizens in Laos and has issued a travel advisory warning about the dangers of tainted alcohol.

Authorities in Laos have long warned tourists about counterfeit drinks, which can contain methanol. Methanol, a toxic substance, can cause severe health problems and even death.

The incident began last week when two Australian teenagers became ill after drinking in Vang Vieng. They were staying at Nana Backpacker Hostel, which offered free vodka shots to guests.

The hostel manager claims that the teenagers were the only ones who became sick. However, Australia and New Zealand have advised their citizens to exercise caution when consuming alcohol in Laos. The US State Department has not yet issued such an advisory.
