Texas Board Approves Bible Teachings in Public Schools
The Texas State Board of Education has voted to approve a plan that will allow Bible teachings in public elementary schools. The curriculum, which was developed by the Texas Education Agency, will be optional for schools to adopt.
The curriculum includes Bible-based lessons and stories from books like Genesis. Schools that implement the curriculum will receive additional funding.
The initiative is part of a trend in Republican-led states to integrate religious teachings into public education. Governor Greg Abbott has expressed support for the program, saying it will allow students to better understand history, art, and literature.
Over 150 teachers and parents testified before the State Board of Education on Monday, with some supporting the proposal and others opposing it. Opponents argued that the curriculum’s Christian focus could alienate students of other faiths.
