MARIETTA — The Cobb County Board of Commissioners approved a series of code changes Thursday night, excluding controversial edits that had been suggested to its zoning code.
The commission voted 4-0, with Chairwoman Lisa Cupid absent, to approve code amendments following a second, significantly shorter public hearing.
The first draft of code edits put forward by Cupid and county staff last month were met with public uproar, specifically over proposed revisions to code guiding accessory dwelling units (ADUs) and family size.
Cupid said ADUs could be a way to address a lack of affordable housing and changing family dynamics. But during the commission’s first public hearing last week, resident after resident lambasted the idea, insisting ADUs would change the identity of Cobb.
Following that feedback, the board voted 5-0 to withdraw the ADU and family size amendments.
“We are struggling to address affordable housing, but that struggle does not mean that we address it without you. Your input is very important,” Cupid said. “I am amenable to pulling any modification to (the code). I am not amenable to us not addressing this issue constructively.”
