Recount confirms it: Sarah Trone Garriott wins reelection to Iowa Senate District 14

Incumbent Democrat Sarah Trone Garriott survived a recount to be reelected in Iowa Senate District 14, fending off a challenge from Republican Mark Hanson.

The recount conducted by a three-member board saw Trone Garriott expand her slim lead by five votes, winning reelection by 29 votes total, Dallas County Auditor Julia Helm said Monday.

But Hanson, a Dallas County supervisor, declined to concede and said the official results report would be submitted at the supervisors’ meeting Tuesday.

Trone Garriott thanked her campaign team, volunteers and staff in the auditor’s office who worked on the recount.

“We are glad that the process is completed now and that all the votes have been counted,” Trone Garriott said. “… We made sure every vote was counted and that’s what matters, and I’m so excited to be able to serve my district.”

The district covers Waukee, Adel, Van Meter and parts of Clive and West Des Moines in Dallas County.

After absentee ballots were counted last week, Trone Garriott’s initial lead of 19 votes expanded to 24. With such a narrow margin, Hanson called for a recount.
