Mickey Stines, the former sheriff of Letcher County, Kentucky, has entered a not-guilty plea to a murder charge in the killing of District Judge Kevin Mullins.

Stines is accused of shooting Mullins, 54, in his chambers on September 19. He was indicted by a grand jury on Thursday and pleaded not guilty to a charge of first-degree murder before Monday’s arraignment.

Judge Julia Adams ordered Stines to remain in jail without bond due to concerns for community and security, as well as the seriousness of the offense.

According to state police, Mullins was shot multiple times after an argument with Stines. The motive for the shooting remains unknown.

Security footage captured the incident, showing Mullins attempting to take cover as he was shot.
