One of the police officers indicted for assault during the 2020 George Floyd protest in Dallas has taken a plea deal.
Former Garland officer Joe Privitt has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge and has been put on 12 months probation. He had faced a felony charge. His attorney, Cody Skipper, says Privitt wanted to put the matter behind him.
“Joe said ‘okay I’ll take a misdemeanor and go about my business. You already stripped me down, you win,’ and Joe can go be with his family.”
Privitt was stripped of his law enforcement license for firing a beanbag out of a shotgun at demonstrators while helping Dallas police in the 2020 protests. He didn’t hit anyone.
Garland Police say he is still with the department but in a civil capacity.
