Illinois court rules Sean Grayson should be released from jail

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — An Illinois appellate court has ruled that Sean Grayson, the former Sangamon County Sheriff’s deputy accused of killing Sonya Massey, should be released from jail pretrial.

Grayson is facing charges of first-degree murder for killing the 36-year-old woman in her home the morning of July 6. He was denied pretrial release, which he appealed.

On Wednesday, the appellate court unanimously ruled that a circuit court’s ruling in July was improper because the state didn’t provide enough evidence about why Grayson should be held.

In their ruling, the justices ordered that the lower court set a hearing to set “the least restrictive
conditions of defendant’s pretrial release.”
