More people are living unhoused in Denton over the years, and City Manager Sara Hensley said part of the reason is that other cities drop off people experiencing homelessness at Denton services.
According to the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness, homelessness is an urgent public health issue and humanitarian crisis that affects cities, suburbs and rural towns in every state and is largely the result of failed policies, underfunded programs that led to affordable housing shortages, wages not keeping up with rising rents and housing costs, and inequitable access to quality health care.
