Economic development bill sends money to western Massachusetts

BOSTON (WWLP) – The passage of a job-creating economic development bond bill is bringing millions of dollars to programs and organizations in western Massachusetts.

Massachusetts looks to license social cannabis consumption

As part of this wide-reaching 319-page bill, passed on November 20, the state is providing significant funding to local-level economic development projects.

Almost $1 million is allocated in the bill to youth development and support programs in western Massachusetts, including:

  • $300,000 to develop and grow the Springfield Symphony Orchestra’s youth program
  • $250,000 for after-school care programs in Springfield
  • $100,000 for Springfield Museums and the home of Dr. Seuss
  • $250,000 for the Acorn Street Boys and Girls Club in Springfield.

The bills also provide funding for other types of projects aimed at economic stimulation, including:

  • $2 million for The Big E and the improvement of tourism in western Massachusetts
  • $1 million for a new police station in West Springfield
  • $1 million for the Basketball Hall of Fame to explore the connections between basketball and hip-hop
  • $250,000 for the African Diaspora Mental Health Association in Springfield.
