DENTON, Texas – Zul Mohamed, a former mayoral candidate in Carrollton, has been sentenced to four years in prison for possessing voters’ ballots without authorization and ten years probation for requesting mail-in ballots without voters’ knowledge. Mohamed pled guilty to the charges stemming from his 2020 campaign, according to the Denton County Criminal District Attorney’s Office.Assistant District Attorneys Jesse Davis and Michelle Dobson presented the case, with support from appellate ADA Lara Tomlin and DA Investigators Paul Nathan and Mark Michniacki. Denton County Elections Administrator Frank Phillips testified that Mohamed did not cast any fraudulent ballots in the November 2020 election, thanks to the efforts of his staff and the subsequent investigation. Captain Ed Barrett led the investigation for the Denton County Sheriff’s Office, working with an inter-agency team including DCSO Captain Jeff Davis, Investigator Eric Hamblin, and Investigator Anthony Dodson.Judge LeeAnn Breading set Mohamed’s probation at the maximum of ten years, with sentences to run concurrently.
