Northern California Battered by Strong Storm
Heavy rains and powerful winds hit Northern California on Saturday, causing widespread power outages and flooding. Over 200,000 residents were left without electricity.
The storm brought a rare tornado warning to San Francisco. The alert was lifted after 20 minutes with no reports of touchdowns. However, meteorologists are investigating potential storm damage in the area.
The storm also brought gusty winds, reaching 83 mph at San Francisco International Airport. Rainfall of 1-2 inches flooded roads and underpasses.
Heavy Snow in Sierra Nevada
Meanwhile, the Sierra Nevada mountains received heavy snowfall, with up to 20 inches expected in higher elevations. Wind gusts up to 120 mph were recorded on mountain ridgetops.
Pacific Northwest Impacted
The storm also impacted the Pacific Northwest, bringing strong winds and a risk of coastal flooding. Gusts reached over 60 mph in some areas. Over 90,000 residents in western Washington lost power.
A combination of high surf, spring tides, and low pressure threatened significant storm surge. Floodwaters of up to 3.5 feet were possible, leading to road closures and property damage.
A weaker atmospheric river is expected to hit the West Coast early next week.
