Pride in the community: McKinley students create mural featuring bulldog, Canton landmarks

CANTON – McKinley High students have a new mural they created in a school hallway.

“Our Town” was a collaborative effort between art students and those in the afterschool program.

Art teacher Ben Myers said about 30 students took part, collaborating on the design. They created the outline by projecting the piece onto the wall outside of Myer’s Room 159.

“It was difficult with the wall’s texture to do the lines,” Myers said. “The students learned about perspective as they created the mural.”

Once the outline was complete, students from the after-school program stepped in. It was a paint-by-number effort.

The mural features a bulldog watching over some of the city’s most recognizable landmarks, including the McKinley monument, the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Onesto.

“The students chose the mural’s name, ‘Our Town,’ to reflect the theme of civic pride and social awareness,” he said. “The bulldog, a well-known symbol of McKinley High School, represents the students themselves standing vigilant over their hometown.”
