Briggs: Grandstanding Toledo politician comically misreads room in uniting Ohio State and Michigan fans

Say this for State Rep. Josh Williams: The guy knows how to bring people together.

In this time of the great division, the Sylvania Township Republican lawmaker accomplished last week what leading anthropologists thought to be impossible.

He united Ohio State and Michigan fans in agreement.

Both sides of the aisle — scarlet and blue — thought Williams’ proposed bill that would make planting a flag at midfield of Ohio Stadium a fifth-degree felony was just about the dumbest thing they had ever heard.

Now that we’ve had a few days to process the idea of processing scofflaw rivals, that bipartisan harmony remains the most amusing aspect of Williams’ grandstanding inanity.

We’ve seen Ohio State-Michigan pandering backfire on politicians before, most notably on John Kerry during the presidential campaign in 2004.

You might remember the time — after a stop in Bowling Green earlier in the day — the Democratic candidate forgot where he was and told a crowd in Taylor, Mich: “I just go for Buckeye football. That’s where I’m coming out.”
