Iranians Charged in Deadly Drone Attack on US Troops

Additional Coverage:

Two Iranian men, Mohammad Mahdi Sadeghi and Mohammad Abedini, have been charged with export control violations in connection to a fatal drone strike that killed three US soldiers in Jordan. Sadeghi, a dual Iranian-American citizen, was arrested in Massachusetts. Abedini was arrested in Italy and is awaiting extradition.

The men are accused of providing sensitive US technology to Iran, which was used in the drone strike. Abedini faces additional charges of conspiracy to support Iran. The strike targeted US forces supporting Operation Inherent Resolve against the Islamic State.

The charges stem from the January 28th attack on a military base near the Syrian and Iraqi border. The drone, traced to an Iranian company operated by Abedini, used technology obtained from the US by Sadeghi.

The FBI alleges that Abedini’s company has ties to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and conspired with Sadeghi to procure sensitive technology into Iran, bypassing US export controls. The three killed soldiers were identified as Sgt.
