DeSoto man who ran after drug sentencing indicted for felony escape, DA says

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Southaven man accused of escaping from DeSoto County deputies after receiving a ten-year sentence for drug possession has been indicted for felony escape.

The Desoto County Sheriff said Stephen Russell Jr., 27, was still in his restraints when he ran from authorities on December 9. He was taken into custody a mile away from the courthouse.

Russell, who had been out on bond, was in court for his plea and was sentenced to 10 years in state prison after being convicted of trafficking fentanyl, followed by ten years of post-release supervision.

DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Barton said the grand jury indictment is the result of the task force the District Attorney’s Office enacted earlier this year to expedite indictments in cases that pose a significant threat to public safety and the public interest.
