(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Crews began tearing down the building on Chicago’s Motor Row on Monday where a nightclub stampede killed 21 people more than two decades ago.
The walls have started to come down at 2347 S Michigan Ave., where the E2 Nightclub once stood. It’s also where 21 people were killed, 50 others injured in a 2003 fight and stampede incident.
It all comes a week after city officials ordered the building to be demolished immediately due to what it called actual and imminent danger to the public.
A month ago the Commission on Chicago Landmarks denied an application for the tear down and called for the building to be preserved.
The building is a historic Motor Road building that preservationists wanted to keep, and families of the victims of the 2003 tragedy want a memorial. The owner has promised to incorporate a memorial to the E2 victims and plans for a new housing complex for senior citizens.
One person strolling by said the demolition is sad to see.
