Man arrested after leading police on high-speed chase from Indiana to Chicago with child in vehicle

HIGHLAND, Ind. – A 26-year-old man is in custody after leading police on a high-speed chase from Indiana into Chicago with a 4-year-old child in his vehicle.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department said just after 5 p.m. Tuesday, officers with the Highland Police Department tried to stop a black BMW in Hammond. The driver of the BMW sped off, prompting officers to initiate a pursuit.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department and a helicopter from the Lake County Aviation Unit tracked the BMW heading onto Torrence Avenue before getting on I-94 westbound and traveling into Illinois.

Officers were able to immobilize the vehicle near 53rd and Morgan in Chicago. The driver then got out of the BMW and ran away, leaving the 4-year-old child inside. Officers then deployed a taser in order to stop him, according to investigators.

The suspect, identified only as a 26-year-old man from Illinois, was taken into custody and transported to a correctional facility in Chicago where he will await extradition to Indiana.
