Get ready for a white-knuckle commute Thursday with snow, blowing snow for AM and PM drives

It won’t be the storm of the century but there is significant snow on the way to Minnesota.

WCCO-TV Chief Meteorologist Chris Shaffer says the snow won’t start flying until after midnight, close to 2:00 or 3:00 a.m. And that the morning commute will likely be a tricky one.

“The Twin Cities still in a pipeline where we could see 2 to 4 inches with a better chance in the northeastern suburbs, with lesser snow in the southwestern suburbs,” says Shaffer. “So there’s your 2 inches to the southwest, 4 inches to the northeast, and then as you head down toward southwestern Minnesota, very little snow expected. Pretty sharp cut off down there.”

Northern Minnesota will get more, with 4 to 6 inches of snow expected. There are a couple of Winter Storm Watches in areas near the Minnesota-North Dakota border , and also in the Twin Ports area of Duluth-Superior . Heavier snow is predicted in those areas.

As for timing for the snow? Not great for commuters.

“I think the heaviest snow is falling right during the morning commute in the Twin Cities tomorrow,” Shaffer explains. “So yeah, there will be a slow commute, a long commute.”
