Dazzling lights festival returning to downtown Providence with new displays

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Downtown Providence will once again become home to an illuminated playground of interactive light installations later this winter.

The Downtown Providence Park Network announced that Lumina will be returning to the capital city on Feb. 1 and run through Feb. 17.

This year’s light festival will feature POP! by Gentilhomme , a public art installation which consists of five glowing monoliths that each contain an inflatable creature.

Visitors can entice the creatures, named POPO, POPUP, POPLI, POPETTE and POPOTIN, to leave their monoliths by talking or singing to them. The monoliths will get brighter throughout the interaction until the creature eventually shows itself.

Each of the creatures will then treat their visitors to a unique musical performance before retreating back into their monoliths. Visitors are also encouraged to band together to free the entire POP! gang at once for a special surprise performance.

POP! isn’t the only public art installation that will be on display throughout the lights festival. Harmony Lanes will feature pedal-powered bikes that, when activated, project dazzling light displays, and Harmonies will offer larger-than-life glowing instruments that visitors can play.
