PUNTA GORDA — Charlotte County Sheriff’s Cpl. Elio Diaz was trying to assist Andrew “A.J.” Mostyn Jr. on Sunday afternoon.
According to Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell, Diaz pulled over the 24-year-old Englewood resident after his tag showed that he had no insurance.
Prummell spoke at a media conference Thursday, releasing photos, videos and details about the shooting of Diaz and his apparent killer, Mostyn.
Diaz spotted Mostyn driving north on the Barron Collier Bridge over the Peace River about 3 p.m. and pulled him over at the Chevron Station in Charlotte Harbor, near the northern end of the bridge.
Mostyn pulled up to one to one of the gas pumps and got out and spoke with the deputy, Prummell said.
The traffic stop started “cordially,” according to Prummell.
Prummell said Diaz realized Mostyn was living out of his truck and decided that, instead of impounding the vehicle and all his possessions in it, he would help Mostyn try to get the financial situation fixed so Mostyn could get back on the road.
