RICHMOND, Texas (KIAH) — A Mississippi man was convicted for shooting his girlfriend’s father in Fort Bend County four years ago.
Tyrik Rashad Hampton, 26, was convicted and sentenced to 50 years in prison by a jury on Tuesday for murder, the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office said.
According to prosecutors, Hampton was upset that his girlfriend went to a party back in February of 2021 and sent threating messages to her and her friend. He then went to her house where her father confronted Hampton and asked him to leave.
Hampton then shot Simon Simmonds several times in the driveway, then shot Simmonds’ wife, who survived her injuries, prosecutors said. Hampton then entered the home, but a DPS trooper who lived in the neighborhood detained Hampton before he harmed anyone else.
During the trial, the girlfriend and Simmonds’ daughter testified that that she suffered abuse by Hampton for a long time.
“Simon Simmonds was senselessly murdered while trying to protect his daughter and his family from a dangerous individual,” said prosecutor Sunni Mitchell. “This jury delivered swift justice and sent a strong message to the defendant that domestic violence will not be tolerated in Fort Bend County.”
