Review board rules on fatal Canton police shooting of Zachary Fornash

CANTON , Ohio (WJW) — An internal review board has concluded that a Canton police officer who fatally shot a man who appeared to be pulling a firearm during a foot chase last year acted within the department’s use-of-force policy.

The shooting happened the night of Dec. 5, 2023 , in the parking lot of Skyline Terrace Apartments along Alan Page Drive Southeast.

Patrolman Garrett Marino was pursuing 24-year-old Zachary Fornash, who’d been accused of brandishing a gun during an argument. Fornash fled from the officer on foot and ignored commands to stop and show his hands.

Marino then saw Fornash turn toward him and, believing Fornash was about to open fire, shot the man multiple times. Fornash was pronounced dead at a hospital.
