WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — A Valley Junction bakery is now providing sweet treats every single day around the clock with the help of a new vending machine.
For 37 years, Nan’s Nummies provided backed goods to people at their bakery in Valley Junction. The new owner, Crystal McLemore, took over the shop three years ago and she had big plans to help expand the bakery.
She wanted to come up with a solution to being able to provide people with baked goods before and after her normal hours.
“We’re only open until 5:30 and a lot of our customers want cookies later than that, but I can’t overwork my people,” she said.
McLemore was inspired by Echo’s Cookies in Waukee who already had a vending machine outside their bakery. When Echo’s Cookies closed in August, the owner was looking to sell the vending machine. McLemore saved money to make the purchase, but Nan’s Nummies was broken into and burglarized. All of the money McLemore saved for the machine was taken from the register.
However, she didn’t give up on her plan and in late November, she was able to purchase and set up a vending machine outside of her bakery.
