5-hour barricade standoff ends peacefully in North Toledo

Police and fire personnel surrounded a North Toledo apartment building Thursday in response to a report of a man in crisis who’d barricaded himself inside.

After an hours-long standoff with police negotiators at the Ottawa Cove Apartments complex, the man surrendered without incident about 6:20 p.m., said Toledo Police Lt. Mike Kurjan.

The man “was in some kind of crisis” and was “apparently suicidal,” Lt. Kurjan said.

The incident in the 1800 block of Ottawa Cove Drive South began about 1:30 p.m. It disrupted after-school drop-offs for students who live in the complex.

Students were instead diverted to Shoreland Elementary for pickup by a parent or guardian, Washington Local Schools said on a Facebook post.

Police did not know whether weapons were on the premises. Police did not identify the man.
