NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — The City of New Orleans has activated its freeze plan for Dec. 20 ahead of the cold weather.
City officials report the National Weather Service predicts the “feel like” temperatures will be at or slightly below freezing during the overnight hours. The prediction is within the 35-degree range of freeze plan activation.

The New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness has coordinated with NWS to update residents. A hard freeze is not expected but residents are advised to protect pets, people and plants.
Shelter locations for the unhoused:
- Ozanam Inn — 2239 Poydras St., starting at 4 p.m.
- New Orleans Mission —1130 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd., starting at 4 p.m.
- The Salvation Army — 4526 S. Claiborne Ave., starting at 4 p.m.
- Low Barrier Shelter — 1530 Gravier St., starting at 6 p.m.
In preparation for the cold residents should adhere to the following tips:
- Stay inside during extreme cold
- Wear layers outside including hats and gloves
- Check on neighbors including children, older adults and the chronically ill
- Bring pets inside
