Senate passes budget bill early Saturday, heading off government shutdown

The Senate voted 85-11 to approve the bill shortly after midnight — technically creating a 15-minute government shutdown, but realistically averting a closure that could have caused havoc in Maryland’s fed-dependent economy. The American Relief Act, 2025, extends funding for most government agencies at current levels until March 24, when Republicans will control both the House and Senate as well as the White House.
