A 51-year-old truck driver died Friday night after being pinned by his semi-truck on I-494 in Inver Grove Heights.
The Minnesota State Patrol said Jay Patrick Smith was performing maintenance work on his 2007 Freightliner semi-truck when the vehicle shifted and pinned him.
Scanner audio reviewed by MN CRIME indicated that troopers were dispatched to a stalled semi just before 9:45 p.m. on westbound I-494 near Babcock Trail. Upon arrival, responders found Smith trapped beneath the vehicle and began providing emergency first aid.
Smith was transported to Regions Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The State Patrol confirmed that road conditions were dry at the time, and alcohol was not a factor in the incident.
The investigation into the fatality remains ongoing.
