Suspect in custody following gunfight with Chicago police officers in North Austin
CHICAGO — A tense confrontation on Chicago’s West Side early Saturday morning resulted in the apprehension of a shooting suspect after an exchange of gunfire with police.
Chicago Police Department (CPD) officials report that the incident began just before 1 a.m. in the 5700 block of West North Avenue, located in the North Austin neighborhood. Officers from the Area 5 Priority Response Team responded to reports of shots fired in the area.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers encountered a chaotic and dangerous situation. A man was seen firing at a victim lying on the ground. When the suspect noticed police, he allegedly turned his weapon toward the officers and opened fire.
One CPD officer returned fire, prompting the suspect to flee the scene. Following a brief pursuit, police successfully took the suspect into custody.
Officers administered first aid to the injured victim at the scene before transporting them to a nearby hospital. The victim’s condition remains undisclosed at this time.
