This week, Marietta’s past connected with its hopes for the future as Mayor Steve Tumlin and Superintendent Grant Rivera went on a day-long tour through all 12 of the Marietta City Schools presenting teachers and students with the Be Somebody Award and the Blue Devil Award.
The Be Somebody Award was given to educators who nurture young minds with endless dedication, while the Blue Devil Award was given to students who are leaders. This journey was a series of ceremonies and an affirmation of Marietta’s call to “Be Somebody” — a mantra etched into the community’s character decades ago by Coach Ben “Big Ben” Wilkins.
“Our educators and students truly exemplify the spirit of Marietta,” Rivera said. “They are role models who remind us that excellence isn’t confined to the classroom, field or auditorium — it permeates every aspect of our community. By carrying the legacy of Coach Wilkins, they reinforce our district’s collective responsibility to live up to the standards of ‘Be Somebody.’ We couldn’t be prouder.”
