Gas leak causes evacuation of Stonebridge Plaza Shopping Center in Chesapeake

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — The Chesapeake Fire Department is urging the public to avoid Stonebridge Plaza Shopping Center in Chesapeake due to a gas leak.

At approximately 8:50 p.m., fire crews were dispatched to the Stonebridge Plaza Shopping Center in reference to multiple reports of a vehicle striking a gas meter and destroying it, causing a major leak.

Chesapeake Engine 12 along with mutual aid units from Portsmouth and Suffolk immediately began evacuating all of the businesses in the shopping center as they were unable to stop the gas leak.

Firefighters are working with Columbia Gas Company to secure the leak. The shopping center will remain closed until the leak has been repaired.

Crews are taking preventative measures and monitoring surrounding residences and businesses to ensure they are not in any immediate danger.
