California has been ranked the worst state to raise a family in 2025, according to a report by ConsumerAffairs. The Golden State placed 51st overall after being evaluated on affordability, education, health care, safety, and quality of life.
The report highlights California’s struggles with affordability (46th), quality of life (50th), and safety (40th). The state also has the nation’s worst air quality and the second-highest child poverty rate at 14%. Parents face the sixth-highest child care costs and significant housing expenses, making California the sixth-least affordable state.
In contrast, Vermont topped the list as the best state for families, excelling in quality of life, education, and safety. Maine and Pennsylvania ranked second and third, respectively.
