Stillwater soccer coach breaks back in crash on icy roads

The family of a Stillwater High School soccer coach is asking for the public’s support after he was injured in a crash on icy roads earlier this month.

Shawn Nelson, the girls’ soccer coach at Stillwater High School, was left with a broken back when he lost control of his car and crashed into a ditch on Dec. 14.

Nelson, who also works in construction, will require a back brace for six to eight weeks, with further recovery required after.

A GoFundMe was recently created to support Nelson and his family as he recovers.

“His family of six faces months of a single income, projected high medical costs and an unknown return to work date,” the fundraiser reads. “Please consider helping this family that has meant so much to our Stillwater community.”

As of Saturday, the fundraiser had reached around $23,000, surpassing its $15,000 goal.
