West St. Paul man sentenced for fatal stabbing at group home

A West St. Paul man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for the fatal 2020 stabbing of David Eugene Rahn at a state-run group home.

John C. Adams II, 43, was sentenced to 367 months in prison in Dakota County court on Friday. He was convicted of intentional 2nd-degree murder in the death of Rahn, who was 68, in September.

According to the criminal complaint, a staff member at the West St. Paul group home where the two men lived called 911 in the early hours of Feb. 17, 2020, to report a disturbance between two clients.

The staff member said she heard Rahn screaming for help from his bedroom. When she attempted to go inside, the door was blocked, and she heard another person say it was “ok.”

Once at the scene, a West St. Paul police officer saw a man later identified as Adams run from a place of worship across the street and into the home.

Officers found Rahn suffering from multiple stab wounds to his neck and back. They attempted CPR until medics arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
