Starbucks Strike Grows Ahead of Christmas

Additional Coverage:

Starbucks employees in Boston, Dallas, and Portland have joined a five-day strike ahead of Christmas. The strike, which began in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Seattle, now affects nearly 50 stores nationwide.

The union representing the workers, Workers United, claims that Starbucks has refused to negotiate in good faith and has failed to address unfair labor practices. The union says Starbucks has not offered a fair economic proposal to baristas.

Fatemeh Alhadjaboodi, a barista from Texas, stated that the strike is a “last resort” due to Starbucks’ broken promises. She criticized the company for investing in executives while neglecting baristas who keep the business running.

The strike is designed to disrupt Starbucks’ busy holiday season. Workers United says the strike will continue until December 24th.

Arloa Fluhr, a bargaining delegate from Illinois, expressed concerns about reduced employee hours and the potential loss of access to healthcare. She emphasized that the strike is just the beginning and that workers are determined to hold Starbucks accountable.

Starbucks claims that the union prematurely ended a bargaining session, but Workers United insists that the company has failed to provide a serious economic proposal. The union is committed to continuing the strike until Starbucks addresses their concerns.
