Teen drug use has declined significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic, but overdose rates are rising due to increased fentanyl use. Data from the University of Michigan’s Monitoring the Future survey and SAMHSA show that in 2023, about 1 in 5 teens aged 12-17 reported using illicit drugs in the past year, down from 28% in 2020. School closures and increased parental supervision during the pandemic likely contributed to this drop.
