Cobb Landmarks Moves to Save 1840s House

After years of preservation efforts and negotiations, the historic Robert McAfee House in the Town Center area may be getting a new location.

Cobb Landmarks announced the owner of the historic 1840s house has agreed to transfer the home to their organization.

The preservation group said it would sell the home for $1 to an individual or organization willing to restore the house and relocate it to a new site.

The cottage, on Bells Ferry Road at the intersection of Barrett Parkway, was constructed for early Cobb County settlers Eliza and Robert McAfee. During the Civil War, the house was used by Brig. Gen. Kenner Garrard as his headquarters shortly after Union forces seized Big Shanty, now known as Kennesaw, according to a historical marker on the front lawn.

While the house has a historical marker, the building and property are not protected from development.

In March, one of the two barns on the property was lost in a fire.

As developments encircle the property, Cobb Landmarks hoped to have the house and remaining barn moved to safeguard the home’s heritage.
