Polk Sheriff’s Office: Lake Wales man dies in crash on SR 60 in foggy conditions

A Lake Wales man died Dec. 19 in a two-vehicle crash on State Road 60 at Boy Scout Camp Road east of Lake Wales, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office reported.

First responders discovered the driver of a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, Timothy Robbins, 61, dead at the scene, PCSO said. The driver of the second vehicle, a Jeep Cherokee, received non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital by Polk County Fire Rescue. Both were the only occupants of their vehicles, PCSO said.

The Toyota truck was traveling south on Boy Scout Camp Road and pulled out onto SR 60 westbound, where it collided with the Jeep about 7:30 a.m., PCSO reported. The driver of the Jeep stated that she did not see the truck pull in front of her in time to brake or maneuver her vehicle because of the weather conditions, the agency said.

Both vehicles came to a stop in the eastbound lanes of SR 60, traveling over the median after colliding. PCSO Traffic Homicide detectives believe that foggy conditions contributed to the crash, according to a news release.
