Lightning, hail possible Tuesday with rare Bay Area thunderstorm

SAN FRANCISCO ( KRON ) — The latest winter storm to roll into the San Francisco Bay Area is expected to arrive with a rumble on Christmas Eve. The National Weather Service is forecasting thunderstorms for most of the region late Monday into Tuesday.

The isolated to scattered thunderstorms will bring a potential for lightning, hail up to the size of pennies, wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour and an increased flood potential, weather officials said Monday. Several inches of rain are forecasted to fall in the North Bay, with areas of Sonoma and Marin counties set to receive up to 3 inches.

Coastal flood and high surf warnings are also in effect along the Bay Area coastline until noon Tuesday. NWS is warning of “dangerous and life-threatening beach conditions” with “very high surf, rip currents, sneaker waves, and coastal flooding” for all beaches along the Pacific coast.

Breaking waves between 30 to 35 feet are expected, with some spots seeing breakers up to 40 feet, according to officials.
