‘Shop with a Sheriff’ event raises holiday spirits for Rutherford kids

Owen considered buying a remote car when selecting Christmas presents.

“My dad would love that,” Owen told SRO Matt Powell and Blackman High School DECA student Abby Wolniakowski.

Powell agreed.

“As a dad, I love it,” Powell replied. “I almost bought one of those last year.”

Owen was one about 35 Rutherford County Schools’ elementary and middle school students chosen to shop with a School Resource Officer and buy Christmas presents during the Shop with the Sheriff event this month.

Sheriff’s Cadets, DECA students from Blackman High School, other deputies, officers from other agencies and volunteers helped students shop at Walmart on Old Fort Parkway.

Santa greeted the students while the Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Association members served breakfast to the kids.

SRO Matt Tucker and Blackman DECA student Zachary Taylor shopped with Kingston, who chose Spiderman toys.

“He loves Spiderman,” Tucker said.

Some students selected presents for their parents or siblings. Other students spent two hours trying to choose their favorite presents.
