Those in Colorado Springs will want to be sure they look to the sky come midnight on New Year’s Eve to spot a spectacle like no other – fireworks exploding above Pikes Peak.
The 102nd rendition of a New Year classic, the AdAmAn Club will be headed to the mountain’s 14,115-foot summit under winter conditions, leaving the Barr Trail trailhead behind at 9 a.m. on December 30 to put on a show for those in the city below the following day.
The group plans to reach Barr Camp by 2:30 p.m., where they’ll rest up for the night.
The following morning – at about 7:30 a.m., the climbers will continue their trek to the Pikes Peak summit, aiming to reach the top of the mountain by 2:30 p.m. The group will also take a pit stop at the Timberline A-Frame feature of the trail prior to summiting for the tradition of ‘mirror flashing’ to those in the city below. Watchful eyes may be able to spot the glint of mirrors on the mountainside.
Once at the summit, crews will start wiring up fireworks around 6 p.m. in preparation to launch a first round of blasts at 9 p.m. in commemoration of the Frozen Five – the original five climbers involved in the long-standing tradition.
