Pickens County introduces automated traffic control system

PICKENS, S.C. (WSPA) – Drivers in Pickens County can expect to see automatic traffic control systems in the coming weeks.

The county’s Roads and Bridges department took a closer look at how to enhance safety, improve traffic flow and reduce delays during roadwork projects.

Ron Swinyer, a driving instructor, is on the road several hours a day helping students learn the ways of the road.

“As a resident, I think it’s a good idea,” said Swinyer. “We have so many people that are coming here from all over the country, and the roads really weren’t meant to have this much traffic on them. Anything we can do to alleviate that, to keep the traffic flowing, because if traffic doesn’t flow, you get road rage and when you get road rage, you get problems.”

While Swinyer is on the roadway, he said he sees work zones often.

“We see people that will pay attention to the flag people, and obey them,” Swinyer continued. “We’ve seen people that do not and so a lot of people get distracted by their phone or whatever.”
